Our new research, in conjunction with Railpen, CIPD and PLSA, aims to demonstrate the possibilities of ‘Worthwhile Workforce Reporting’. By outlining examples of good practice, this document can act as a tool for engagement and discussion.

New research exploring ‘Worthwhile Workforce Reporting’ has been published by Railpen, supported by the High Pay Centre, CIPD, and PSLA. The report aims to illuminate examples of good practice in workforce reporting, which reflects an engagement between companies, their employees and other stakeholders.

Within the report it will be possible for investors, company professionals and other experts to understand our view of what constitutes good workforce reporting and see examples of best practice. The aim of this guidance is to help companies to improve their reporting and to support investors’ engagements with portfolio companies.

Workforce reporting should be meaningful and material, as well as useful for investors and other stakeholders. Below it is possible to see the key principles of workforce reporting.

It is the aim of the document to be a contribution to the evolving debate on workforce disclosure. Whilst not all points will apply to all companies, the aim of the discussion is to emphasise what is possible when companies report on their workforce. Therefore, the framework is to be considered an opportunity for improvement and consideration on how best to approach reporting.

With an overriding objective of transparency, it is possible to catalyse change within organisations. As the workplace is an increasingly significant aspect of our lives, it becomes important to engage with the workforce in an intentional way. This does not include obscuring that which might be perceived as ‘bad news’ but instead acknowledging it, providing context and offering measurable solutions. Fostering a reflective and considerate approach to the workforce and how it is reported on will invariably offer benefits to all stakeholders – not least developing a sense of trust and understanding which will boost workforce engagement.
